Hokema Kalimbas and Sansulas

HOKEMA has stood for high-quality musical instruments since 1985. The firm, based in the small town of Walsrode in Lower Saxony, develops and produces unique sound wonders: Kalimbas. The warm, soft and gently relaxing sounds are harmonious in themselves as well as when played with other instruments. Anyone can immediately begin to play the handy Kalimbas: due to the pre-tuned scales, wonderful enchanting melodies are created. Peter Hokema, the founder and owner of the firm, experimented passionately with various instruments during his study of music and it was this that led him to discover these traditional African plucked instruments.

The breakthrough came in 2001 when Peter invented the Sansula: an oval wooden frame covered with drumskin which resonates to the tones of the Kalimba mounted in the centre. The sounds were immediately greeted with great enthusiasm and the instrument was duly patented.

Today the family firm, in its second generation and with 9 employees, is one of the leading producers worldwide of various models of attractive and easily-playable Kalimbas. They are made of high quality materials such as cherrywood exclusively in Germany and in cooperation with German suppliers. The energy required is generated by the company’s own ecologically-friendly photovoltaic module on the roof of the production facility in Walsrode.

The Kalimba B7 is the ‘sister’ of the B9 and is likewise a small and handy instrument with a solid resonance corpus of American cherrywood.
The measurements of both instruments are the same but the tuning, number and breadth of the tines differ.

Due to the deeper tones of the seven pentatonically-tuned tines, the vibrations are felt particularly strongly in the hands. For this reason, the B7 is especially favoured by therapists.
The tuning of the Kalimba B7 is pentatonic C.
Tuning ex works (can be varied): e ́, g , d ́, e , c ́, a , a ́
The sounds produced are therefore always in harmony and so beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.

Hokema B11 Kalimba Melody

Hokema B11 Kalimba Melody

by Hokema Kalimbas
$81.00

Kalimbas are metal-tined instruments which originated in southern Africa and which can be found there in countless variations.
Our Kalimba B 11 ‘Melody’ is made of solid American black cherry wood and meticulously hand-crafted. The surfaces are treated and polished with natural oils and waxes. The 11 tines are precisely tuned to the scale of G- Major, so that a large number of well-known songs can be played. The ‘Melody’ is also ideal for improvisation and intuitive playing.
We have positioned the long and short tines alternately to ensure ease of playing and in accordance with acoustic criteria.
The six shorter tines have been bent so that their ends are raised above the level of the longer ones so that they can easily be reached by the thumbs. When playing from the low to the high tones, the five long tines are plucked alternately by the thumbs beginning in the middle and moving outwards - the right thumb begins on Tine No. 6 – then the six shorter tines follow, also played from the middle outwards, whereby the left thumb begins on Tine No. 5.
Tabulature
The eleven tines are numbered from left to right. The even numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 represent the longer tines with the lower tones, the odd numbers stand for the shorter, bent tines with the higher tones. Normally – for single-voice melodies – the left thumb (L) plays the tines 1-6 and the right thumb (R) plays numbers 6-11.

Hokema Twin Kalimba

Hokema Twin Kalimba

by Hokema Kalimbas
$131.00
Twin Kalimba
Twin – the double B9 kalimba
The Twin is 30cm (12‘‘) long and is fitted with two identically-tuned sets of tines so the instrument can be played by either one or two persons.

Playing solo
Hold the Twin in both hands so that each thumb can reach one of the sets of tines. The thumbs can now play the nine tones on both sides of the instrument.
A full sound, rich in overtones, is created due to the identical tuning of both sets of tines: each tone has its twin on the other side which then resonates when its ‘brother’ is plucked. By plucking alternately with both thumbs, quite other tone sequences can be produced than on a single kalimba with the same tuning. The advanced kalimba player can play a wide range of other scales simply by retuning individual tones.
Playing duo
The real motive leading to the development of the Twin was the wish to have an instrument with which a sound experience could be shared by therapist/patient, couples, family members, friends etc. The identical tun- ing of the two sets of tines guarantees harmonious tone sequences and sounds. The resonance of the tones is picked up by the wooden corpus and can be physically felt by the partner.
The kalimba stays in tune when being played but the tuning can be changed if desired. Tones on the two sides of the instrument which differ from but nevertheless harmonize with each other are thus also possible.

Like all HOKEMA Kalimbas, the Klassik can easily be played from the start. By plucking the tines with the thumbs, melodies can be composed immediately and creatively varied.
We have been producing this instrument for over 20 years. While the outward appearance has hardly changed, we have constantly worked on improving details.

Hokema Kalimba Sansula Basic

Hokema Kalimba Sansula Basic

by Hokema Kalimbas
$132.00
The Sansula belongs to the family of the Kalimba and can be played just as easily. The instrument, with its patented suspended mounting of the resonating block, is an innovation entirely of our own design. Since its launching in 2001, the Sansula has quickly become a bestseller and found thousands of friends at home and abroad. The special feature of the Sansula is its unbelievable sound. Whereby the clear and aesthetic design is most appealing. The oval frame of laminated beechwood is fitted with a membrane which, together with the resonating block, produces a prolonged, soft tone. Furthermore, an impressive 'wah-wah' effect can be produced by holding the instrument against the body, on the thigh or laying it on a table and then alternately raising and lowering it while playing.

The Tuning A minor with additional tines pitched at B and F., a´, c´´, c´, a´, a, f´, e´, e´´, b´
allows even the beginner to create melodies as there is no wrong note, all notes work together harmonically.
size: 8 x 6.4 x 3.2 inch

Hokema Kalimba Sansula Renaissance

We have developed the Sansula Renaissance to combine the best features of our other models in one.
While the basic Sansula instrument has a relatively delicate membrane, the Renaissance is fitted with a robust synthetic REMO drumskin.

The Renaissance is resistant to moisture, so it retains its tension under conditions of varying air humidity and thus also retains its wonderful sound. For all age groups.
Most importantly, the Sansula Renaissance has inherited the indescribable sounds of the Sansula Klassik.
The tuning of the instrument, in a-minor with additional b and f, allows wonderful melodies to be produced, almost by themselves, by plucking the tines with the thumbs.
Optisch unterscheidet sich das neue Modell durch eine abgerundete Holzkante auf der Oberseite des Instruments.
Tuning ex-works (can be varied):

Hokema Kalimbas Sansula Deluxe

Hokema Kalimbas Sansula Deluxe

by Hokema Kalimbas
$261.00
The Sansula Deluxe is a further development of our basic Sansula model. In response to the wishes expressed by many customers, we have fitted it with a robust membrane of genuine goatskin and an adjustable tension device. These modifications greatly increase the range of possibilities of the instrument.

Whereas the basic Sansula model is too delicate for use by small children, the Sansula Deluxe can be used in nurseries and music schools without fear of the instrument being easily damaged. The Sansula Deluxe must, however, be handled with the same reasonable care as all musical instruments.

The tuning – a-minor with additional tines pitched at B and F – allows wonderful melodies to be produced almost of their own accord, simply by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonise with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.

The natural materials used make each of the Deluxe models supplied unique, characterised by an even richer and warmer sound while at the same time being more robust. For all age groups.
